We wanted to improve the student experience by providing greater knowledge of the natural environment around the University of Edinburgh campus and improving access to it.

The challenge

To identify and map Green Infrastructure in selected areas of the University of Edinburgh campus and develop a mobile app for internal business and student use. The University needed an easy and convenient method of quantifying how ‘green’ it is and to identify ways it can improve.

What we did

How Green is Your Campus? is underpinned by a data model which provides a simple way to assess quantity and quality of green infrastructure. It uses the Scottish Wildlife Trust Natural Capital Standard for Green Infrastructure tool and is based on models developed under EU initiatives. The Natural Capital Standard for GI assigns an overall score to the GI of a development.

It uses standard GIS functionality to implement the data model and parcel up land. The mobile application then allows users to collect, edit field data and view results.

Funding was provided by a Student Experience Grant, Estates Department, The Department for Social Responsibility and Sustainability and EDINA and based on the Scottish Wildlife Trust Natural Capital Standard for Green Infrastructure.
