Developing at Scale: Digimap for Schools

Having successfully run an online mapping service for the Higher Education sector, we were asked to create another for a quite different audience….and in just a matter of months. Thus in 2010, Digimap for Schools was devised and released in quick succession.

The challenge was to maintain the robustness and key features of a popular user interface, yet make it appealing to a younger, less advanced user group. By enlisting the help of key stakeholders and partners in the process, we achieved the aim and were duly commended with a Geographical Association Publishers' Gold Award (2011) recognising our achievement in creating a successful resource extending across year groups in primary and secondary education.

In February 2016 Digimap for Schools celebrated its 1000th secondary school subscriber and continues to see growing subscriptions by schools across the UK.

Innovation into Service: SUNCAT

Two years of scoping and four years of project work, ensured that SUNCAT started life as a service with very solid foundations. As a first instance of a UK national union catalogue of serials it was a pioneering endeavour in turning a new idea into a reliable online resource. The secret was getting the right people involved at the right time and feeding their comments into the development. Couple that with the skilled deployment of the appropriate technologies and you have a dependable web service now in its tenth year of operation and much respected as a core reference resource. In September 2016 we welcomed five new contributing libraries taking the total to 108 libraries representing a hugely diverse range of academic, national and specialist libraries whose serials holdings can now be explored in SUNCAT.

To have the Statistical Accounts Online provides a great opportunity to access this fascinating information and make it easily available to a wider audience.
