This week (20th-24th March) the first DataFest, a week-long festival of data innovation, takes place with events running across Scotland. EDINA is delighted to be presenting three workshops, all of which are open to all audiences and free to attend, as part of the DataFest Fringe. Our events, which are also part of “Designing with Data” – a strand of events designed by a group of innovative public and private sector organisations across Edinburgh, include:

Edinburgh Cityscope Open Data Workshop (Monday 20th March, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm)

In this workshop participants will hear about and have opportunity to share their ideas around the innovative Edinburgh Cityscope project, which is creating the digital infrastructure to make Edinburgh a Global City of Learning. The project is led by Prof. Jonathan Silvertown who will be speaking about the project, its ambitions and technical development to date. EDINA are a partner in this project and we will be there giving an overview of our work on Curious Edinburgh and Fieldtrip Open as part of this event.

Visualisation of Spatial Data using QGIS (Tuesday 21st March, 9:15 – 11:15 am)

This hands-on workshop will introduce participants to QGIS, an open source GIS platform which can be used with both open data (which we will be demonstrate) and licensed data (including Ordnance Survey data from Digimap). We regularly run standard and bespoke QGIS and geospatial data workshops across the UK for all audiences. Please get in touch if you’d like to find out more.

Playing with research data from the University of Edinburgh’s DataShare repository  (Tuesday 21st March, 11:30 am to 1:30 pm)

EDINA colleagues who are specialists in research data management and data analysis will be leading this workshop on data from the University of Edinburgh DataShare repository. Datashare includes a wide range of research data, including images, speech, maps and statistics, from researchers across the University which can be explored, analysed, used in new projects, etc.

EDINA will also have a stand at the National Records of Scotland Changing Lives with Data event (Monday 20th March, 1.00 pm - 4.00 pm) which is also part of the Designing with Data series. You will be able to find out about our Statistical Accounts of Scotland, our geospatial data and expertise, as well as how our data can be used alongside datasets available from government and other organisations from across Scotland.
