Unlock Text

Unlock Text is a powerful geoparser that can search text hosted on the web in txt or html format for references to locations. These locations are then returned ready for use in your results page, web map or any other application.

The Unlock Text API provides access to two parsers:

LTG Parser

Unlock Text uses a geoparser developed by the Language Technology group at the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh. The parser searches for likely place names in the text you provide and uses the Unlock Places API to generate a georeferenced set of results, along with a copy of the submitted text with all matched locations highlighted. Further detailed information on the LTG parser can be found in the official documentation.

The second parser is a modified version of the CLAVIN geoparser. We have customised the original CLAVIN code to use the gazetteers in the Unlock Places API. Similar to the LTG parser, the CLAVIN parser attempts to find all locations mentioned in a text and also returns the original text with any resolved locations marked up with span tags.

Unlock Text is an API so can be called directly or from a web project for example. Have a look at the getting started page to see how you can integrate it into your work.

We have also a developed a Demo Website for the Unlock Text API, which allows you to try geoparsing documents without the need for a REST client or console.
