Checklist of things to do
- Do you need to do anything at all?
- Are users at your institution downloading Land-Line data at the moment? If not, there may be no need for you to do anything.
- You only need to upgrade disk space allocations and application software if there is a requirement for these things amongst your users.
- Don't panic about acquiring new software just for OS MasterMap. If your users have not been using GIS software until now, they probably won't require it immediately and only for using OS MasterMap data.
- Please talk to EDINA if you are concerned about this.
- Check how much disk space your students have available to them.
- OS MasterMap Topographic data is up to 5 times larger than Land-Line data
- You may need to consult members of teaching staff to ask how much disk space each student requires in order to complete coursework.
- If you can't provide sufficient disk space per student, teaching staff may need to find alternative means of providing access to the data required.
- What versions of GIS software is available to users?
- Will the version available read .gz files or .gml files?
- Is the same version available across all shared computers?
- Do you need an Unzip utility with which to unzip downloaded files if your GIS application will not read.gz file?
- Do you need any translation/conversion software to use with your GIS application?
- For example, if you have ArcGIS 9.1 you will also need MapManager 9.1. If you have ArcGIS 9.2 you will need the ESRI Productivity Suite. If you have MapInfo 6.x or 7.x you will need OSM2MIF (available from http://www.bodley.ox.ac.uk/guides/maps/translat.htm)
- Attend one of EDINA's OS MasterMap training courses. These will be held in July and later in the Autumn term. Dates and venues to be announced.
