How do I use the data in my GIS?

There are several software packages now available that make the process of loading the OS MasterMap GML data into a GIS quite simple. These are in addition to 'built-in' converters that are supplied with the most recent versions of MapInfo, ArcGIS and AutoCad software.

For more details of how to use OS MasterMap data in a GIS see the Digimap Help pages ("MasterMap Download" and "Using data with GIS") available from within the Digimap Ordnance Survey Collection.

Important: Please check what software is already available to you locally before downloading and installing other software. You may find that appropriate conversion software is supplied by your institution. Please ask your local Digimap site representative for details.

For MapInfo

  1. OSM2MIF from Nigel James at the Bodleian Library Map Room
  2. InterpOSe for Digimap Edition from Dotted Eyes
  3. For MapInfo version 8.0 and later there is a 'built-in' converter available under Table --> Import --> Files of type: OS MasterMap (*.gml). Note, that the compressed .gz files need to be uncompressed to .gml for this converter.

These packages are free and will load the OS MasterMap fully represented into MapInfo

For ArcGIS

  1. Productivity Suite 1.x. (available through Chest) contains MapManager and will convert OS MasterMap to Geodatabase format. It comes complete with a number of Layer Files for representation (see the local installation folder of Productivity Suite for details). Layer files are also available from the EDINA MasterMap website
  2. InterpOSe from Dotted Eyes - this will convert OS MasterMap to Shape files for loading into ArcGIS/ArcView and comes with a Style file to represent the data using OS style.
  3. ArcGIS can open GML data directly using the Add Data interface.

For AutoCad

  1. InterpOSe from Dotted Eyes - will convert OS MasterMap to DXF and DWG and has a template file (.DWT) for representing the data using OS style.
  2. AutoCad Map 3D 2008 (and other later versions) there is a built-in converter available under File --> Import --> Import --> Files of type: OS (GB) MasterMap.
