Introduction of OS MasterMap® to the Ordnance Survey Data Collection
This information is also available as a downloadable PDF.
General
This document describes the main features of the service that will be provided by Digimap in relation to OS MasterMap data.
Digimap provides access to a wide range of datasets for both online mapping and data download. The introduction of the OS MasterMap product provides a significant enhancement to the Digimap service both in terms of the data being offered and the functionality of the service.
This document describes those features, over and above the current functionality of the existing Digimap service, which will be provided in the first full release (scheduled for August 2007).

The data that will be available through Digimap will be:
- OS MasterMap Topography Layer
- OS MasterMap Integrated Transport Network (ITN) Layer
OS MasterMap Topography Layer
The Topography Layer is a large-scale topographic database. It is the replacement dataset for Land-Line.Plus and offers the most detailed mapping available for Great Britain.
- The data is stored as a seamless dataset i.e. there are no artificial breaks, such as tile boundaries, in the data.
- The data has been cleaned, structured and polygonised.
- The Topography Layer has nine themes representing: land area classifications; buildings; roads, tracks and paths; rail; water; terrain and height; heritage and antiquities; structures; and administrative boundaries.
OS MasterMap ITN
ITN is the definitive road network dataset. It contains all roads in Great Britain along with routing information for driving and navigation purposes, including:
- Mini roundabouts
- Bridge heights
- Traffic calming
- Vehicle restrictions
- One-way roads
- Vehicular type access and time restrictions
These will be offered in two themes: road network and road routing information (RRI).
Top of PageMapping Facility
Topography Layer data will replace Land-Line.Plus data in both Digimap Classic and Digimap Carto mapping applications. All other functionalities of Classic and Carto will remain as they are currently.
Map Content
The user will be able to select particular OS MasterMap themes, and feature classes within those themes, for mapping.
Cartographic Representation
A set of alternative cartographic representations will be available including:
- the Ordnance Survey standard OS MasterMap style
- a Land-Line-like representation (no area fills)
Format
The generated maps will be available as EPS and PDF files for downloading.
Top of PageData Download Facility
Both Topography Layer and ITN data will be available for download.
Navigation
Although the underlying OS MasterMap data is seamless, it will be possible to navigate to an area of interest by using 'historical' OS tile names as well as other standard means such as Latitude/Longitude, Easting/Northing and postcode.
Format
Data will be provided in the Geography Markup Language (GML) which is an open spatial data standard.
Selection of Area
There will be various options available for defining an area of interest when downloading data, including:
- rectangular area
- predefined boundary
Selection of Themes
Users will be able to select the themes they want for downloading.
Delivery
The data will be available for delivery after the user is informed by email that their data is ready. Downloaded data will be available split into geographic chucks for easier downloading and processing.
Compression
The downloaded data will be available in a number of compression formats, including gzip., zip and tar. Users will be able to choose which compression format they require.
Validation
Digimap will supply a file with each download that lists the TOIDS downloaded so that the user can check all objects are successfully loaded.
Update Frequency
The OS MasterMap data will be updated on a regular basis.
Change Only Update
A change-only-update (COU) service will be provided that will allow the user to download changes since their original data supply.
Top of PageSupport
Comprehensive support will be provided for OS MasterMap data in the Digimap service through a number of channels, including:
- online documents
- telephone and email support
- discussion forum (Bulletin Board)
