Film & Sound Online has five navigational areas:
The navigation bar at the top of the screen allows you to move between any of the main areas.
This is the default search screen. For more search options, go to the Advanced Search screen.
In this area you can enter a search term, and choose all or one of the six fields to search, using the drop-down menu:

On the Advanced Search screen, you have the following additional capabilities:
Clicking on a collection name will give a brief overview of the collection. A link "Browse all titles in this collection" displays the full list of titles for that collection.
screen image of Collections screen:
screen image of Browse by Subject screen:
The Browse by Subject screen lists all the subject terms, and the number of films in each classification. Clicking on a subject term will display the films contained in that category.
screen image of Search History screen:
This displays a list of searches already performed in the current session.
Combine any marked searches with Boolean operators ANY (OR), or ALL (AND). Tick the boxes next to the collection title to select which searches to combine.
screen image of Search Results screen:
Up to ten records are listed on each page, with links to take you to the next or previous page of results. A Sort button allows you to sort the results by Title or Year in either ascending or descending order. Click on the titles to view the individual records.
Sort: Search results of less than 300 are sorted by default in ascending date order. The "change your sort" link lets you sort the list of images by "Title" or "Date" in either ascending or descending order.
Download
To download a film segment, select a format (Windows Media Player or Quicktime), click on the link at the end of a segment description. To download the whole film, click on the link at the end of the full record.
Playback
To play films you will need either Windows Media Player (recommended for Windows-based PC users) or QuickTime (recommended for Mac users). In most cases no additional software installation or configuration should be required. If you have any problems, please contact your computer support department in the first instance.
Playback using QuickTime
If you are using QuickTime to play back the films, it must be version 3 or above.
Playback using Windows Media Player
If you are using Windows Media Player to play back the films, it must be version 7 or above. From Windows 98 onwards all the operating systems released (for eg. ME, 2000 and XP) will be able to play the films.
If this is version 6.4, let a person in your computing support know that they need to install version 7 codec for WMP to allow playback of the films.

The full record includes a description of the film (in segments) and subject and general keywords. The film can be downloaded and viewed in separate segments, or as a complete file.
To save an image to your Desktop:
| Use | To |
|---|---|
| * | Truncate. This matches any number of characters in the middle of or at the end of a search item. Use this to find forms of a root word, e.g. danc* retrieves dance, dancer, danced, etc. |
| ? | Matches 0 or 1 character within or at end of a word. For example: col?r retrieves color and colour. |
Boolean operators help define the relationships between words or groups of words.
| Use | To |
|---|---|
| AND | Narrow search, and retrieve records containing all of the words it separates. |
| OR | Broaden search, and retrieve records containing any of the words it separates. |
| NOT | Narrow search, and retrieve records that do not contain the term following it. |
No operator: If no operator is used with more than one word in a search term, AND becomes the default operator between the words.
Lucky Dip: This service offers a random selection of the service content. Try it and see!
Keep in touch: This allows you to register to receive service announcements and updates via email.
Learning Materials: View and create case studies, reviews or external projects to support the use of the materials in teaching and learning.
Restricted Materials: For medical departments only, due to content sensitivity and/or patient confidentiality. Access may be granted through your medical librarian or other medical authority.Online help is available at all times. To return from Help to the previous area, follow the relevant link in the navigation bar at the top.
It is good practice to use the Exit link when you have finished the session. This will take you to a logoff page where you click the Logoff link. You will exit from your Education Image Gallery session. From here you may either continue to use other Athens authenticated services or logout of Athens altogether. You will be automatically logged out after a period of non-use of the interface.
