Summary

Geophysical surveys of large areas inside and outside the Roman legionary fortress. Also excavation of a warehouse within the fortress.

Datasets used

Ordnance Survey Collections, Historic Digimap. Scales used: 1:10k, 1:25k and 1:50k.

Aims and Objectives

Research project aiming to better understand the layout of the Roman legionary fortress at Caerleon and its surrounding civilian settlement.

Methodology

Magnetometer and resistivity surveys of large areas around Caerleon. Results plotted over OS maps and LiDAR data.

Results/Outcome

Previously unknown complex of monumental ‘public’ buildings located along the River Usk, and ribbon development of cottage-like plots along the main out westwards out of the fortress.
