Digimap Collections User Registration

This page provides details of the user registration procedures for users at institutions which subscribe to the following Digimap Collections:

  • Digimap - Ordnance Survey Data Collection
  • Geology Digimap
  • Marine Digimap

Historic Digimap does not require user registration.

How to Register

As part of the registration process, you first must login to your university portal or library service. Your institution's Site Representative will be able to show you how to do this if you are unsure.

Once you have logged into your local site follow the step by step process below to register. If you are at a computer that is shared with other users such as in a library PC lab then make sure all browsers are closed and previous session has fully logged out before you begin.

PLEASE NOTE: If you are already registered for one Collection and wish to register for another, please use the same online form. You can access the online registration form by logging in to Digimap and choosing the Collection you wish to register for. If you are already registered, you will gain access to the service. If not then you will be taken to the registration form:

Registration can take up to 2 working days as we need to review each submission to ensure they are from a valid user.

1. Go to the Digimap login page:

Click the Login button.

  • If you have already logged into your local portal or library resource since you last re-started your web browser, this should take you straight into the service. Go on to step 3.
  • If you have NOT already authenticated, you will be prompted to do so. This involves specifying which institution you are from and then giving your username and password.

2. Log in to your home institution:

First, specify which institution you wish to authenticate with. If you have not already authenticated, after clicking the login button you should see a web page like this:

Begin typing your own institution into the box, the names of applicable institutions will appear as you type. Pick your institution from the list and click the "Continue" button. You may notice some institutions that you have used before appear as shortcuts above the search. You will then proceed to you local instituitions login page, enter your username and password as requested. the interface varies depending on your institution.

NOTE: If you can't find your own institution listed here, please talk to your local support team for help. Your local authentication system may not be set up in a way that permits access to Digimap.

If your password has been accepted, briefly you should see a message entitled "Shibboleth Authentication Request Processed". This may be displayed for a few seconds. It looks like this:

If you have forgotten your password please talk to your local support staff within your institution. EDINA does not issue passwords. There is no special password for Digimap. You should use the same password as for other electronic resources to which your institution provides you with access.

Following this, you should see the Digimap Collections page. It looks like this:

If this process did not work, please check the following list of troubleshooting notes. These may help you identify the problem and find the best person to help you: Troubleshooting Notes.

3. Select the collection you want to register for:

Click on the collection you want to register for; you will have the option to register for all the other collections that your institution subscribes on the form.

Some collections may appear grey and do not do anything when clicked on. Your institution does not subscribe to these collections so you will not be able to register for them.

4. Fill in the Forms

On the first page of the registration forms there are some instructions about the process followed by the terms of use, please read these carefully. Once you have done so click Continue at the bottom.

If you have already registered but your details have not been processed yet then you will see the following message; remember you must allow at least one night for the registration to be processed (possibly two at the busiest times of the year, October and February). You will receive an email once the registration has been processed.

Fill in your details on the next page, your User Identifier and Institution are filled in for you based on the details you logged in to your university with.

Confirm your details are correct and click the Proceed with registration button. If you want to make a change use the back arrow button on your browser, this is normally found at the top left of your screen.

You have now successfully submitted your details for registration, the final page will confirm what you have entered. There is also a reminder of the Terms and Conditions you have agreed to below these.

5. What happens next?

Your details will now be checked by EDINA to make sure that they area correct and that you are eligible to use the service. You will receive an email telling you your registration has been successful within 2 working days. Your registration will not be successful if you have not entered a valid email address or if anything you enter on the form indicates that your intended usage is not permitted. You may receive an email asking you to clarify some details.

Finally there are links to resources you can look at while your registration is being processed. These are a great way to find out how to use Digimap and to get information about any changes or improvements to the service.
