Accessibility Statement for CAB Abstracts

This is the official accessibility statement for the CAB Abstracts service. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact us on edina@ed.ac.uk.

Access keys

Most browsers support jumping to specific links by typing keys defined on the web site. On Windows, you can press ALT + an access key; on Macintosh, you can press Control + an access key (depending on which browser you use).

All the pages in this service define the access keys noted below:

  • Access key 1 - Service login page (does not log out, however)
  • Access key 2 - Skip to main content
  • Access key 3 - Accessibility statement
  • Access key 4 - Standard Search page
  • Access key 5 - Advanced Search page
  • Access key 6 - Index Browse Search page
  • Access key T - CAB Thesaurus page
  • Access key 7 - Search History page
  • Access key 8 - Light-box page
  • Access key 9 - Help page
  • Access key 0 - Logout page

Standards compliance

  1. The pages within the CAB Abstracts service should comply with all priority 1 guidelines of the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.
  2. The pages within the CAB Abstracts service mostly validate as XHTML 1.0 Transitional.
  3. Where applicable, pages in this service use structured semantic markup. H2 tags are used for main titles, H3 tags and lower for subtitles. For example, on this page, JAWS users can skip to the next section within the accessibility statement by pressing ALT+INSERT+3.

Navigation

  1. At the top of each page there is a Skip to main content link (accesskey 2) mapped to a blank space, in order to bypass navigation links for keyboard users.
  2. Every page has a global toolbar which precedes the main content of the page. The two logos link to the login page (the CAB Abstracts logo) and the main EDINA web site (the EDINA logo). The main navigation-bar includes the following links: "Standard Search", "Advanced Search", "Browse Indexes", "CAB Thesaurus", "Marked Records", "Search History", "Help" and "Exit".
  3. Every page has a standard footer. This contains four links: "Terms of Use", "FAQ", this accessibility statement, and a mailto: link to assist contacting EDINA support staff for support.

Links

  1. Links are written to make sense out of context.
  2. Where images are used as the link item, the alt text of the image should be the same as the title text for both the image and the link.
  3. When a link leads away from the EDINA web site, a new browser window will open. This should be noted in the title of the link.

Images

  1. All content images used in this service include descriptive alt attributes. Purely decorative graphics include null alt attributes.

Visual design

  1. This service uses tables for visual layout. Where used solely for layout purposes, table headers are not used, and the summary attribute is either blank, or not used.
  2. This service uses only relative font sizes, compatible with the user-specified "text size" option in visual browsers.
  3. Style sheets are used to designate font size and colour, both in "ordinary" text and linked text, and background and other visual layout aspects of tables.
  4. If your browser or browsing device does not support stylesheets at all, the content of each page should still be readable.
